Shared Learning Objectives

Participants in IDEELS simulations come from different countries, cultures, and academic disciplines; they frequently have rather divergent individual and discipline-related learning goals and priorities. Yet despite their inherent differences, all participants share certain learning objectives. These fall into three main areas: cooperation / collaboration, socio-affective, and interdisciplinary / cross-cultural.
  • cooperative / collaborative objectives
    • create and maintain an atmosphere of mutual respect and trust
    • develop team skills
    • share responsibility for achieving group goals
  • socio-affective objectives
    • become more aware of one's learning style and needs
    • take responsibility for one's own learning
    • develop the ability to respond flexibly to unexpected situations
    • learn about one's Signature Strengths
  • interdisciplinary / cross-cultural objectives
    • increase awareness and appreciation of, and respect for cultural differences
    • develop cross-cultural and interdisciplinary communication skills
    • apply these skills to the simulation process
    • understand the ways in which environments, languages, beliefs and practices can be both culturally cohesive and divisive
  • cognitive objectives
    • learn to value both the rigorous and creative aspects of effective thinking
    • develop cognitive skills that support effective thinking about complex issues
    • generate and evaluate ideas and solutions
    • understand complex human and community issues and identify actions that support both global and local well-being

In addition to these shared learning objectives, participants may have a number of specific learning objectives related to the context from within which they take part in the simulation, as well as their own personal objectives. Experience shows that as long as all participants subscribe to the shared learning objectives listed above, IDEELS simulations are sufficiently broadly conceived that a wide variety of individual and discipline-specific objectives can be accommodated.
